Woman of Valor
The Woman of Valor, known in Hebrew as Eshet Chayil, is a hymn traditionally recited on Friday evenings. Families say it after returning from the synagogue and singing Shalom Aleichem, and just before sitting down to the Shabbat evening meal. In this moment, the poem becomes a heartfelt expression of appreciation, honoring the woman of the home as Shabbat begins.
King Solomon concludes the Book of Proverbs with Eshet Chayil (Proverbs 31), a poem composed of twenty-two verses. Each verse begins with a successive letter of the Hebrew alphabet, forming an acrostic structure. Through this poetic form, the text portrays the woman of valor as energetic, righteous, capable, and deeply respected. The verses describe her wisdom, strength, generosity, and devotion, presenting a timeless image of dignity and inner beauty.
